The Troubled Teen Industry (TTI)

Every Child Counts

Each year, thousands of children are taken against their will — many pulled from their beds in the middle of the night by strangers — and placed in private facilities marketed to parents, therapists, courts, and insurance companies as legitimate therapeutic care. These programs go by a myriad of names, like “Therapeutic Boarding Schools”, “Residential Treatment Centers,” “boot camps,” “religious academies,””wilderness therapy,” and “group homes.” These programs form a largely unregulated network known as the Troubled Teen Industry (TTI).

Rather than delivering the evidence-based treatment they promise, many TTI facilities subject young people to physical, verbal, and sexual abuse, forced isolation, hard labor, chemical sedation, food and sleep deprivation, attack therapy, and civil rights violations. In the most devastating cases, young people don’t make it home at all.

Thousands of survivors have come forward about the abuse they endured. Unsilenced exists to amplify their voices and fight for accountability — through education, survivor support, and access to justice.

It is time to believe the survivors.

It is time to take action.

What is the Troubled Teen Industry?

Right now, 120,000 – 200,000 young people are receiving “treatment” in a Troubled Teen Industry-related facility in the United States, and that number only increases every year.

What is the Troubled Teen Industry, and why should you care?

This short video answers these questions and more. Watch below.
